Halifax program that plants wild species expands to entire municipality

Halifax council is expanding a application that takes advantage of native and non-indigenous plant species to enrich biodiversity in the urban landscape.

Council’s ecosystem and sustainability committee passed the motion Thursday to invest $150,000 to grow a three-location naturalization challenge to the total municipality. The reduced-routine maintenance initiative assists improve ecological resilience.

“The curiosity and results in the naturalization projects have led to a conclusion that a long-lasting naturalization system should really be regarded, together with committed workers and resources, specifically if we desire to optimize the scale and impression of naturalization,” Richard Harvey, the city’s manager of policy and planning, told the committee on Thursday.

Council accredited a series of naturalization initiatives in January 2019, which includes a two-12 months pilot method.

Having said that, the pilot was interrupted by the pandemic and council approved an extension in March 2021.

Giving an overview of the initial web pages preferred, Harvey claimed Leighton Dillman Park at the Dartmouth Common was planted with wildflower seedlings, dogwood trees, butterfly bush and summersweet shrubs.

Harvey said the previous grassed region of Merv Sullivan Park in north-stop Halifax was transformed into a planted gathering area.

With the involvement of community volunteers, Harvey explained, the location is now planted with serviceberries, bear berries, bee balm and swamp milkweed.

The third web page in the pilot undertaking is on Sime Court in Hammonds Plains, a former grassed road shoulder.

“This was just a ideal of way that the neighbours have been mowing for several years and they came alongside one another and claimed, ‘Let’s just plant a butterfly backyard, let us plant a boulevard back garden,’ and it was great,” said deputy mayor Pam Lovelace, who is also the councillor for the space.
